One of my favorite fiction reads. I am working my way through them again in audiobook format.
This series is a medieval CSI. The protagonist is Brother Cadfael, a Benedictine monk. He "came late to the cowl" (as the story says) after a lifetime as a soldier/sailor, fought in the Crusades and against pirates. He traveled over most of the known world of the time, especially in the Middle East. He is a herbalist and a keen student of human nature. I got hooked on the videos with Sir Derek Jacobi when they were on Masterpiece Theater. The books are even better.
